Mimpi boy group BTS menggenggam piala Grammy pertamanya kembali kandas, setelah masuk nominasi selama tiga tahun berturut. Namun, kritikus menyebut RM dkk tidaklah gagal sama sekali.

Pada Grammy Awards 2023, menurut laporan The Korea Herald, BTS atau Bangtan Sonyeondan masuk dalam sejumlah nominasi, antara lain kategori Best Pop Duo or Group Performance melalui “My Universe”, lagu kolaborasi dengan band rock Inggris Coldplay.

BTS juga masuk dalam kategori Best Music Video untuk “Yet to Come” dan Album of the Year untuk Music of the Spheres. Namun, tak satupun dari kategori itu BTS menangkan Grammy.

Grammy Award 2023 dijadwalkan tayang pada Minggu, 5 Februari 2023 pukul 8-11:30 p.m. ET/5-8:30 p.m (Senin, 6 Februari 2023 pukul 07.00 AM WIB) melalui CBS Television Network dan Paramount+. Acara nominasi musik ini diselenggarakan di Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, California.

Penghargaan kategori Best Music Video diberikan kepada penyanyi Taylor Swift untuk “All Too Well: The Short Film”. Sementara itu, Kim Petras dan Sam Smith dengan “Unholy” memenangkan Grammy untuk kategori Best Duo or Group Performance dan penyanyi Harry Styles membawa pulang penghargaan kategori Album of the Year melalui Harry’s House.

BTS menghadiri atau tampil di Grammy Awards secara berturut-turut pada 2019, 2020, 2021, dan 2022. Pada tahun 2021 dan 2022, septet K-pop itu menghadiri upacara Grammy sebagai nominator untuk Best Duo atau Group Performance dan menampilkan single “Dynamite” dan “Butter” di atas panggung.

BTS tidak datang ke Grammy tahun ini karena sedang hiatus. Jin, salah seorang anggota BTS, sedang mengikuti wajib militer sampai beberapa waktu ke depan.

Kritikus musik di Korea Selatan, melihat kegagalan BTS bukan sesuatu yang penting. Kritikus musik pop Kim Young-dae mengatakan bahwa BTS masuk nominasi itu sesuatu yang membanggakan. Berkat BTS, maka banyak orang Korea mulai memberikan perhatian lebih pada Grammy.

Bangtan Boys tidak sendirian bernasib demikian. Ada banyak nama-nama besar, seperti Snoop Dogg, yang dinominasikan berkali-kali tetapi belum menang. “Maka, hanya berfokus pada kemenangan, tentu ini tidak adil.”

Kritikus musik pop lainnya, Kim Do-heon berbicara dengan nada yang sama, menambahkan akan ada prospek yang lebih besar untuk memenangkan Grammy jika BTS terus membuat musik band sendiri tentang cerita mereka sendiri.

“Saya pribadi berharap BTS dapat membuat lebih banyak album seperti seri ‘Map of the Soul’ di mana mereka menyuarakan cerita mereka sendiri. Semoga di 2025-26, ketika grup ini siap untuk kembali sepenuhnya, para anggota akan lebih dewasa dan mampu membuat musik mereka sendiri yang dapat meninggalkan jejak yang bermakna secara sosial di kancah musik AS,” kata Kim.

Sementara itu, artis pop Amerika Beyonce cetak sejarah di Grammy ke-65 itu. Dia berhasil memenangkan total empat trofi, termasuk lagu R&B terbaik dengan “Cuff It” dan album musik dansa/elektronik terbaik dengan “Renaissance.” Sehingga Beyonce secara total telah mengoleksi 32 piala Grammy, jumlah terbanyak oleh artis mana pun dalam sejarah Grammy.
